My family came to Canada via Barbados and Bermuda in either the late 1850's or early 1860's. My great-grandfather was transferred to work in Churches in Ontario (he was a minister). It was hoped that the colder weather might extend his life as he was suffering from tuberculosis - he died in 1864. His widow and infant son returned to her family home in Bermuda but returned permanently to Canada a few years later when she re-married.
