I am researching my paternal ancestors and after reading some family history, it says my 3rd great grandmother was named Catherine McDougall, b. in Edinburgh, Scotland 1785 of "noble birth". Her mother was a Campbell, and her father was a ship merchant captain named Alexander McDougall, who plied his ship from Liverpool, England to Charleston, SC. Her mother died shortly after her birth and she was raised by her grandmother Campbell in Edinburgh because her grandmother did not like the second wife of McDougall and refused to turn over Catherine to him. When Catherine was a young (maybe around 10 years old) girl her father kidnapped her and brought her to Charleston, SC, USA, changed her name to McCullough/McCollum,so her grandmother couldn't find her. She lived with her stepmother and two stepbrothers. Her father set out to sail his ship back to Liverpool but encountered a bad storm and he and his ship were lost at sea. Soon her stepmother ran out of money to raise all three children and she placed Catherine in an orphanage. Later she was adopted by Judge Samuel H. Wilds and lived with his family in Society Hill, SC. Later she met my 3rd great grandfather, Henry Wood, and they were married in 1810. They both died in 1862, and buried in Lydia, SC.
Does anyone have any information on this Campbell family in Edinburgh? I have found a birth record of a woman named Elizabeth McDougall, b. 1785 in Edinburgh District whose parents were Alexander McDougall and Elizabeth Campbell. I have no information on a "Catherine McDougall". I'm wondering if her name could be Elizabeth Catherine McDougall.
