Jackie,
It's possible that your ancestor was in the British Army and stationed in Australia.I was going through the papers in the National Archives at Kew (England) yesterday (20-8-05) and browsed through a Martin McDonnell's records whilst searching for my relatives.I didn't take much notice I'm afraid because it's not a family christian name.
However, Martin isn't that common a name for a McDonnell in my experience of days spent delving so you may be able to confirm or deny ancestry very quickly. For me, I have Michael to contend with!
The records you need are in Dept WO (War Office), Section 97.From here, there are hundreds of records, many of which have never been scanned into the system and existin only as paper. If you have any more detail on Peter, he may have followed his father into the same regiment and that could curtail your search dramatically.
I hope this has been of some help.
Philip
