Coming to the United States in 1828 from Ireland where he was born in 1802 in the parish of Mays, Queens County, Patrick McDonald, the original head of the McDonald clan, has more than 500 descendents.Patrick McDonald and Mary Ellen Brennan married when she was 18 and he was 20.On board the ship which carried them to their new home, they endured their first sorrow.The oldest child, Patrick, became ill and died.As was the custom in those days, the child was buried at sea.Arriving in Pottsville, they occupied a log cabin near the spot where St. Patrick’s Church now stands.Here they opened a tavern known as the Traveler’s Rest.To this union were born nine surviving sons and one daughter.The family later moved from Mahantongo Street to East Mines Road.As the children grew older and married, many of them settled in the vicinity of East Inns and Mill Creek.
In addition to Patrick who died at sea, the following were names of the living children: Alexander, Thomas, Michael, James, Jeremiah, John, William, Edward, and one daughter, Julia.
1.Alexander fought in the Mexican War in 1846.Later, he became a policeman in Philadelphia.He married and had one child a daughter, Isabel.
2.James who married Margaret Lynch was the father of 18 children, thirteen of whom were reared to manhood and womanhood.James was a tailor by trade and resided at East Mines.He later moved to Kaska where he followed mining and was superintendent of the Kaska colliery.He died at Kaska, and a daughter still resides there, Mrs. Rose Russell.
The other living children are:Mrs. Bridget Boyle, Mrs. Frances Sharkey, James McDonald, Mrs. Elizabeth Wals, Mrs. Margaret Mack, Jeremiah of Middleport, and Thomas of Lower Mill Creek.
3.Thomas McDonald, son of Patrick, married Catherine Tierney, and they were parents of 19 children.
4.Michael was the father of nine.Somewhere along the line, Michael’s wife died, and he remarried.His new wife had four children: Florence, Edward, Charles, and Agnes.
5.John had three offspring’s.
6.William each had three offspring.
7.Julia, the only daughter, married William Ryan, and they were the parents of 12 children.
The Ryan family lived in Shenandoah.
8.Edward was unmarried.
9.Jeremiah married Jenny, Mary Ellen Brennan’s sister.
All of Patrick’s children have passed away, the last one being Michael who died a year ago in Pottsville. Three other sons were in the Civil War.
