Bob, this is the second certificate which I wrote about in my posting. In a book by Willie McDonald Arnesen titled "Our McDonald Family" the author makes a statement before she includes in her book information about the same certificates. The statement on page 4 "Willis and his family lived in Burke County, Georgia and were members of McBean Baptist Church until 1799, when he got the idea to further explore the unknown."The certificate is the following:
"STATE OF GEORGIA,
BURKE COUNTY
We the subscribers do certify that Willis McDANIEL [the McDonald book has the name entered as McDONALD, (McDANIEL)] has been an inhabitant of this State for some years and has behaved himself as a good citizen, and (it) never has been known or heard but that he is an honest man.
As witness our hands:
GEORGE POYTHREE,Brigage Major, (I think the spellingof this name should be POYTHRESS)
A. CARSWELL, Capt.
ISAAC WALKER, Capt.
JAMES WALKER (the McDonald book also indicates Capt.)
ABSOLON JONES, Scpo C.A.V
JAMES COOK
NOAH SMITH
JACOB TARVER
ANDREW TARVER
DREWY WOMBLE, Capt.
DAVID OWEN
MOSES JOHNSON
EDMOND BAYNE, Esq., (the McDonald book spells it PAYNE)
WILL LITTLE,
JOHN DAVIS, Colonel
JOHN CARSTON, Lieut.
HOPKINS DYE, Capt.
JAMES BROWN, Lieut.
ALEX. CARSWELL
RICHARD HINES, J. P.
"The following is a copy of the certificate of membership and dismission of WILLIS McDONALD and his wife DORTIA McDONALD from the Baptist Church at McBean:
"State of Georgia,
Burke County
1799
Whereas brother WILLIS McDONALD and his wife DORTIA McDONALD, being members in fellowship in the Baptist Church at McBean (and) being about to remove over the mountains, has (have) applied to us for a dismission, we do certify that they are dismissed from us, and we hope through grace, they will persevere.
Assigned in behalf of the Church
Jacob Tarver, Pastor" (notice that Jacob also signed the above certificate)
Bob, in the McDonald book the author states that JOHNATHAN McDONALD was issued a passport April 1809, tocome to Miss. Do you have this information in your research on Johnathan?Am I correct that you descend from Johnathan?I am looking forward to hearing from you again.
Cecilia
