Joseph McDonald in Augusta Co, VA @1750

In the 1750s Joseph McDonald was a neighbor to Robert McGee, James Bane, Wm. Byers, Wm. Ingles, Jacob Lingle, James Preston, John Draper, Michael Price, George Sharp and others along the New River in Augusta County. My question has to do with where Joseph lived prior to settling in VA. Does anyone know? My theory is that most or all of this group came from Pennsylvania and I am looking for information to either corroborate or disprove my theory. It is likely, if I am correct, that they were recruited by Preston to settle on the land grant given to Preston's uncle, Colonel Patton. Can anyone shed any light on this? Also, does anyone know from where and when the McDonalds came to North America? Thanks, Bill
