W. B. McDonald age 9 in 1870 Shelby Co., AL Census

Does anyone have connections to the W. B. McDonald shown as age 9 in the 1870 Census for Hillsboro, Shelby Co., AL?
He is shown with his older brother Robert (age 11) and they are living with their mother, Fadora, and stepfather, William G. Falkner. Their father was James Robert McDonald who I believe was killed in the Civil War. He is not found in the 1880 Shelby Co. census as "W.B." so I have no way to know what his real name is.
I would like to find a connection to W. B. so I can understand what happened to him and trace his line of the family. I have no idea what his initials stand for.

Thanks a bunch in advance.
