Hi. I don't seem to be having any luck searching this forum for any connections so I thought I would post this and see if anyone out there responds. My husband's grandmother was born Ella McDonald, born 1880 in Philadelphia, married to Mathias William Barton. Her mother was born Emma Klein, born in 1862 also in Philadelphia, married to a McDonald. They had several children in addition to Ella, the first two being Emma and Frank, so I surmise that Emma's father was Frank or Francis but I have no proof. If anyone is related to the other children of Ella McDonald and knows her husband's name, please contact me! I have more evidence that Frank is his name but the missing piece would have been in 1890 Census which was mostly destroyed. However, the 1890 Philadelphia City Directory shows Frank McDonald, Engineer, living on Bodine Street. There was a John Klein living next door! In the 1880 census, I see John Klein (on Bodine Street) has a daughter named Emma, so that all lines up. However, Frank has a couple brothers, and they are also of an age to be Emma's husband, and the names like James, John and Joseph repeat in descendents all over the place (but very common names anyway). We do know that Emma's husband worked for the railroad, and that is probably what is meant by "engineer". That is another clue. But with the common name of McDonald, who can say, unless they have other sources? In 1880, according to the census, Francis H. McDonald, a RR Fireman (also still on Bodine Street) lived with his mother Bridget Johnson, and his brothers James, John and Joseph. In 1870, Bridget and Robert Johnson lived with their sons Francis, James, John and Joseph. In 1860, Bridget and James McDonald (a coppersmith) lived with their small sons Henry and John (Henry was probably Francis HENRY, Patrick and James would not have been born yet) - just another guess). So between 1860 I presume that James McD sr died and Bridget married Robert Johnson, and the boys were listed with his name, either by mistake or by choice. In the 1850 census, James McDonald, a coppersmith, born in Pennsylvania, lived in Philadelphia with his mother Ann who came from Ireland. That's as far as I go. I usually stop when I figure out what country ancestors came from, not being particularly interested in researching outside the US. So there it is. I think I have a nice US lineage for Frank McDonald, but I have no firm proof that he is related to my husband! If this connects up with anyone out there, please contact me. My husband's Aunt Eleanor said SOMEONE out there was researching the family - are you out there??? - Tina Notify Administrator about this message?
