Notes for OWEN SLAUGHTER, JR.:
[SLAUGHTER FAMILY 1.FTW]
"Owen Slaughter II was a farmer. However, he was listed as a licensed
minister in 1808 and in 1812 was ordained "To the work of the Gospel
Ministry of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Richmond, North Carolina." (A
General History of the Baptist Denomination in American by David Benedict)
Owen bought and sold many pieces of land during his lifetime. When the
first tax was compiled in 1795, Owen owned 218 acres. His land was near
his father's on Big Mountain Creek. When he died in 1830, he owned 600
acres of land.Widow Mrs. Priscilla ? THOMAS lived near.
Her husband Simon THOMAS diedin 1815.Their families had grown up
knowing one another.Simon and Priscilla's daughter, Sarah THOMAS
married Owen's son Daniel SLAUGHTER.Owen SLAUGHTER, Jr. and
Mrs. Priscilla ? THOMAS married and entered into a marriage contract.
The 600 acres Owen owned when he died is described: North West bank of
Big Mountain Creek, Corner of Hugh Ingrams to Postone Corner, East Bank
of 3 Mile Run, Corner of the land sold by William SLAUGHTER to an INGRAM,
to the back line of 200 acre survey granted to James SMITH, down courses to
COSTER's line, then to LAD's line and then to John MORRISON and to
another of MORRISON's, then to EVANS Corner, then to East Bank, said Creek
just below the Old Mill Dam of Owen SLAUGHTER, Sr., then up the banks
above the Old Mill Dam."
