Thanks for your interesting response. The more I ponder this family, the more unsure I am about the surname. The earliest record for my McDonald ancestors in St. Charles, Missouri is the marriage of Jean-Baptiste McDonald to Susanne Quesnel in 1799.The priest who recorded the event was French, andthe record is in French. The record states that the parents of the groom were Jean-Baptiste McDonald and Therese Soreau of Montreal. But in 1824, when the son of Jean-Baptiste McDonald and Susan Quesnel married in St. Charles, the name was spelled Magdelaine. After 1850, however, the name was spelled McDonald. So maybe it was McDonald all along but just rendered more "French" for a few decades by the priests in St. Charles. My McDonalds relocated to Rouleau (Rulo), Nebraska, and were thoroughlyFrench. Can you recommend any reference works on the Irish-French-Canadian mixing?
Thanks,
Ron Bachman
