My great-great grandparents were Matthew and Josephine McDill, who emigrated in the 1850s from Abbeville, SC, to Arkansas, where my great-grandfather, Joel Alexander McDill was born in 1880, in a place variously called Goatshed, Smokey Row, Garretson Landing, Moscow, etc., on the Arkansas River. He did not like farming and was tending a saloon in town when he met and married Ruth Irene Allen, my great-grandmother.
My grandmother, Ruth McDill, was born to Ruth Irene and Joel Alexander in Lake Village, Arkansas, in October of 1920. She married Thaddeus Ray Cary, Jr. of Louisiana in the 1940s and they had six children, including my mother Mary Josephine.
Josephine Brent McDill's parents were Charles Brent and Elizabeth Hill Brent, I assume also of SC, possibly Abbeville. Unfortunately, we know very little about the Brents, but the McDills were Scotch-Irish (obviously).
We'd be very interested in knowing more about the McDills (when they emigrated, where they came from), since I'll be in Scotland for the next year while my husband is at the University of Edinburgh, and I'd like to do some research while I'm here.
