If you've got a date of death, you should be able to locate the cemetary plot.It may be rather tedious, but worth the effort.
Since your ancestor lived in Brooklyn, I would start there. The BIG Roman Catholic cemetary in Brooklyn that comes to mind immediately is Holy Cross or something similar. The big one for Catholics from Manhattan and Queens is Calvary.
You should call the Brooklyn cemetary first.Ask them to locate a burial for your McDermott ancestor within a 5 day range after the date of death.Better yet, if the death certificate gives an internment date, ask them to search for that date.If such a record is found, they will tell you what cost of printing a copy of the record costs, etc. Those records are priceless - they include birthdates, dates of death, and occassionally, and country of birth.
Someone has an informative webpage posted solely devoted to NYC cemetaries.I can't remember the URL, but you should be able to locate it with a search engine.
