Known as Martha McCrary to the line of her husband, William Glenn Erwin.

Martha B/ Patsy B McCurry was orphaned along with her siblings when their father, Lauchlin McCurry died ABT 1826/1827 leaving their mother, Mary Polly Penn widowed. Martha appears to have been named after her maternal grandmother, Martha Burden Penn, and the middle initial 'B' could represent her grandmother's maiden name of 'Burden'.

Martha B, and Patsy B, are the same person shown in Administrators and Guardian Records in GA. Historically, the nickname for Martha was often Patsy which doesn't seem to 'fit', but, as odd as it may seem, "By the 18th century, the names Patsy and Patty were found in English-speaking lands as a nickname for Martha which only became common since the 16th century."

"By the 18th century, the names Patsy and Patty were found in English-speaking lands, as a nickname for Martha (which had only become commons since the 16th century). Martha became Patty by dropping the R and switching the M to a P, a process that is also found in such names as Peggy (Meggy, Margaret) and Polly (Molly, Mary). The ending “see” was also found in many girls’ nicknames of the time including Nancy (Nanny), Betsy (Betty), Fancy (Fanny), etc."

The following information was found in Elbert Co., Georgia Records;

Returns of Administrators and Guardians, Elbert Co., Georgia; Will Book 'N', 1828-1831, Pg. 65.
March 1828: Smith, Valentine Appointed for orphans of Lauchlin McCurry, deceased; Daniel N., Flora M., Benjamin C., Lyon Hunt, Martha B (Burden), Edmond Shackleford, Gardner McGarity.

Returns for 1829, Pg. 91. Shows Benjamin Penn; Guardian of Flora M., Daniel N., Patsy B, and Benjamin C. McCurry, orphans of Lauchlin McCurry, board for all 1829.

Returns for 1831, Pg. 80; Benjamin Penn, Guardian of minor heirs of Lauchlin McCurry, Dec'd. Shows receipt of Abner J. Penn for tuition for Daniel N. and Martha B McCurry.
