I meant to have added this in my previous post. You mentioned that your father-in-law's grandfather was Hull McCurry. I found a Hull McCurry in the 1870 US Census for Alabama in Madison County. He is listed as 21 years old(born 1849), is single and living in the same household as:
Nancy McCurry, age 40
Lydia McCurry, age 39
Ransom McCurry, age 35
William McCurry, age 31
Hull McCurry, age 21
Is this Hull McCurry your father-in-law's grandfather?

Not too far away lives a Samuel McCurry born 1820 in TN.
His wife Sarah born 1840 in Georgia. And, their children:
