Holyrood House, 4th November 1630.
Charge to the feuars and tacksmen of the Priory of Whithorn to pay to the Bishop of Galloway their share of the taxation appointed in July last.
Letters of charge under the Signet at the instance of Andrew, Bishop of Galloway, against the feuars of the lands and tacksmen of the teinds of the priory of QUHITTORNE (Whithorn) for payment to him of their proportions of the taxation granted in July last, which they refuse to pay without compulsion for his relief. The taxation for the first term is as follows :
Alexander , Earl of Galloway, for his lands of Stennock, for Portyerrock, for the Mains of Quhittorne, for his half of the Yle (Isle ?) of Quhittorne.
(Anthony Houston and his wife nee Gordon c.1660s? had castle at Isle of Whithorn).
Patrick VAUS, fiar of Barnbarroch, for his lands of Carletoun, Kerindone, Apiwie, Cragilmeyne, Craichdow, Outoun, Burges Outoun, Corwar, Wig, Stennock, Stewarts Wig, Curmalyew, Aurleis and Baverenoch.
Anthone HOWSTOUN of Drumastoun, for his lands of Prestorie
(he or descendant had castle at Isle of Whitehorn)
John FLEEMING of Carwod, for his lands of Crugiltoun Castell, and for his half lands of Crugiltoun,
Johne STEWART of Crugiltoun, for his half lands thereof,
Alexander CUNINGHAME, fiar of Poltoun, for his lands thereof, (see land grants in co. Donegal plantation)
(not sure if he or McAlexander married the dau of Arch. Adair & Jeanette Houston ?).

James McCULLOCH of Drummorell for his teinds of Drummorrell,
Alexander, Earl of GALLOWAY, for his teinds of the kirks and parishes of Quhittorne, Glassertoun, Crugiltoun, Sorbie, Kirkmadine, Mochrum, Toshantoun als Kirkmadine, Clashant, Kirkdaill, Kirkanders, Borg and Glestoun.
(Houston / McCulloch may earlier have had lands of Toskartoun - refer transfer from/to Wm Adair to/from Wm Houstoun c.1618)
They are to pay these sums within 20 days after being charged, under pain of horning (being declared or announced in the middle of the town to be an outlaw or outside of the law).
For the sake of any of these persons who are out of the country proclamation is to be made of the letters at the market-cross at Edinburgh and at the pier and shore of Leith for payment within 60 days.

A note on the margin states that the letters were produced on 4th January 1631, at Edinburgh by John LOGANE, messenger, and recorded in the Books of Counsell by Mr. Alexander SKENE, clerk depute to Sir John HAMILTOUN of Magdalens, knight, Clerk of our Soverane Lords Register, Council and Rolls.

It is also noted on the back that execution was made at Edinburgh and Leith on 7th January, 1631; witnesses, - at Edinburgh, Robert DALGLEISHE, messenger, and Walter LYESK, pursuivant, and at Leith, George GORDOUN, messenger, and James HIRD in Edinburgh.
