McCullens became McQuellens

Does anyone know why Thomas & Mary(nee ORR) McCullen of Ireland, Carlisle, Liverpool, Birkenhead and Kensington, London became McQuellen in about 1887?
There are descendants in London (me), Ipswich, Ashford and New Jersey that I am aware of.
