Dear Penny,

It is lovely to see your posting and so nice to meet you! You and your cousin have accomplished such terrific research in your family tree. It is all fascinating to read, and on my family's side we are all truly grateful. You have opened up a whole dialogue about our family history that we might never have had otherwise.

I spoke to my dad about the Emily Lunney m. James McCready marriage registration just tonight. He listened with great interest, but his best immediate guess is that it may not be the correct Emily Lunney who married his grandfather David McCrea. My guess is that we have to look into it a bit more. I think it could be correct because there are times where names are not recorded with absolute correctness. There is also a small chance that David McCrea's birth name was not 'David,' and could have been James; after all, David's son David did not go by the name of David but was known by 'Laurie' or 'Lory'(we don't know what the spelling was). Since the census may not have requested or required persons to produce their certificates of marriage or birth it is possible that David's real name was quite possibly James; he could still have had the name 'David' recorded as his name on the census without deeper questions made by the census taker. It is hard to say, and we will see what we can find on our end. We are all still not sure if they married in Ireland or in England; there are definite possibilites for either place.

My dad mentions about the records fires that occurred which may be a hinderance to finding a Emily Lunney m. David Lunney marriage certificate. He mentions that when Ireland was one country all records were kept in Dublin and were lost in fire there. He also mentions that, when all of Ireland was part of Britain, copies of all Irish records--and copies of records from all of Britain--were also kept in Somerset House in London since it was the capitol of all Britain, but they suffered a fire there and records were burned long before he was born. With your experience in family history research you most likely were well aware of this problem. Hopefully, there will be other relations who will post their personal genealogy in time and help fill in the blanks.

My e-mail is mich3827 AT hotmail.com if you would like to get in touch with me personally at any time. The same goes for your cousin Doug. You can change the AT to @ to stave off the spammers.

Best wishes to you,
Michelle Lennox
