In his book, John Burgoyne of Saratoga, James Lunt wrote the following at page 177:
“Many years later Burgoyne received a letter from Jane McCrea’s brother, who had served under him in the campaign of 1777. Burgoyne had succeeded in obtaining a company for McCrea, and was obviously pleased to do him this service. ‘I had been accused by the malicious of having encouraged the Indians to acts of barbarity,’ he wrote in the margin of McCrae’s letter. “It was a great pleasure to me to be thought of so differently by that lady’s brother, as five years afterwards, when he hd other and more able supporters, to be singled out as the person whom he wished to act as his patron. From a man of Captain McCrae’s character, this selection was not only a pleasing evidence of my innocence, it was one on his mind of my abhorrence of that act.” The citation for this quote is de Fonblanque, “Political and Military Episodes, page 259.”
My question is what was the given name of the brother or half-brother of Jane McCrea, who wrote to Burgoyne? Does anyone know, per chance?
