"Scotch Irish Pioneers in Ulster and America" by C K Bolton, thatJohn McCreigh was RulingElder in Ballybay, County Monaghan in 1703.David Nesbitt is a Presbyterian minister in County Monaghan, Ireland. He wrote a boook about his church: "Full Circle, A Story of Ballybay Presbyterians."His research showed that John and Thomas McCrea were among the adult male members of Thomas Clark's congregation who moved to Salem NY in 1764 - the 'Cahans exodus' (Full Circle page 372). They would therefore have been members of Ballybay (later Cahans) Seceder congregation.
Rev. Dr. Thomas Clark and part of his Ballybay (in Co. Monaghan, Ireland) congregation sailed on the Ship John from the port of Newry, in the north of Ireland, on 10 May 1764 and arrived in New York on 28 July 1764.There were about 300 passengers and Rev Clark and about 140 of these immediately left for Albany in two sloops. The ship's master was Luke Kierstad. Source: a book called "Destiny of the Scotch-Irish" - an account of a migration from Ballybay to Washington County and on to South Carolina.
In 1771, a petition of Thomas McCrea, Andrew Lytle, John McCrea and Dr. Thomas Clark, of New Perth, was made for a grant of seventeen hundred acres of land within bounds of land formerly granted Robert Harper.(Note:This Thomas and John McCrea were clearly from Ballybay, and not from the more southerly colonies from whence came Jane McCrea and another John McCrea.)
Residents, in 1789, of the Turner Patent, Washington Co., NY included the following
Thomas Collins, 150a, (no lot listed, he married to Mary McCrea, daughter of Thomas McCrea--all my ancestors)
John McCrea, 88a, lot 158 (Note I think this John McCrea is not the one who came from Ballybay, but the famous Col John McCrea who was related to Jane McCrea, and who became County Clerk in Salem, NY).
I have transcribed a deed from Washington County that includes my ancestors, Mary McCrea (who married Thomas Collins) and her father, Thomas McCrea. It does not mention John McCrea, obviously a relative from Ballybay, but it lists a Martha, Elizabeth, and Alexander McCrea, which should be of some interes to folks studying the McCreas who were part of the opening of this part of New York to Irish settlers.I should be greatly interested in any information on this Alexander McCrea because he had financial dealings with my McCreas.
