John and Alexander McCrea of NY in 1780s
The history books of Washington County, New York, make very clear that Colonel John McCrea, older brother of the famous Jane McCrea who was scalped near Ft Edward in 1777, became the County Clerk of Washington County and settled in Salem, New York, in the late 1780s.I have several good signatures of the man with this name who served as County Clerk.I am hopeful that someone may have a signature of the John McCrea who was a Colonel near Saratoga during the Revolutionary War, so I can compare signatures.Because there was another John McCrea in the area at the time, I want to satisfy myself beyond all reasonable doubt that these two Johns were demonstrably the same man.
Additionally, I have a copy of the indenture (land contract) by which Thomas McCrea and two of his three daughters (Elisebeth and Martha) acquired land three miles south of Salem, New York, in 1773.Upon sale of this land, the purchaser (Ephraim Wheeler) obtained a mortgage from an Alexander McCrea of Saratoga. Can anyone tell me anything about this Alexander McCrea? This might help me determine more about relationships among all the McCreas who settled in the Salem area before 1800.
For sure, my Thomas McCrea was part of the congregation of Rev Thomas Clark, which left Ballybay, Ireland, in 1764 for New York.
Cheers from Hal on Johnston Atoll.
