Re: Looking For The Father of Herbert McRea
Thanks for offering the help for I really need it. This research has become very confusing for me. I don’t know whether to look for McIver or McRae at this point. I’m trying very hard to find the point when the name changed. I’ll tell you what I have thus far:
First of all, this is an Afro-American household. My information starts in 1930 where Herbert McRae (Fowlstown, Ga) was 22 years old and married to an Eva Harris (age 20) of Spring Creek, Ga. Who had siblings named:
John Harris: 17 years
Nerussill Harris: 14 years
Herbert and Eva were married four years in 1930 (probable married in 1926). The 1930 census list the following in the household:
Father: Herb McRae – 22 y. o.
Mother: Eva Harris McRae – 20 y. o.
Son (1): John Henry McRae – 3 y. o. (June 3, 1926)
Son (2): Roger Lee McRae – 2 y. o. (October 17, 1927)
Sister-in-law: Nerussill Harris - * 16 y. o. (unsubstantiated age difference)
** Herb’s father is from Louisiana**
Shortly after 1930, the McRae family moved to Bainbridge, Ga, Where both boys attended Hutto high school before quitting school and moving to south Florida. It is not known if Herb McRae or Nerussill was still with the family in Bainbridge. When I was a pre-teen, I remember my grand mother Eva but she was now a Daniel (1954). Jacksonville, Florida holds a significant memory for that is where my father went when he left Bainbridge (with mother Eva) before moving down to Miami, Florida. Researching the Harris family put Edd Harris (Eva’s father) in Jacksonville around 1936. I believe this is why my father and his mother were in Jacksonville for a short time. The 1945 census in Florida showed my father’s last name as McCray, Married, and living in Miami, Florida with one child (my sister – 7 months old). Roger Lee was also listed in that census as McCray also, married with one child (Betty Lou McCray), and living in Perrine, Florida.
I believe this to be the right path I followed but the surname “McIver” will probably send me down another path.
