John McOwen/McCowen 1758-1858

Looking for information on a John McOwen (McCowen/McCune) who was living in Chester County abt. 1789, not far from Valley Forge, when his daughter Margaret was born. Margaret married a George Bell in Chester County and their first child James Bell was born there in 1808. By the time a son William was born in 1811,they were living in Springfield Township, Muskingum County, Ohio - near Zanesville.

A John MCune was in West Whiteland Township,Chester County, Pennsylvania 1800, page 885, and a Joseph Bell was on page 884, both shown to have children in the right categories to have been Margaret McOwen/McCune and George Bell, but I have nothing other than circumstantial evidence to even suggest they were the parents.

When John was enumerated on the 1820 census for Muskingum County, both he and his wife are listed as over 45 or born before 1775. This wife evidently died before the 1830 census when John is shown with a much younger woman, and there is a marriage for John "McCowan" and an Esther Bosley in Muskingum County records for 15 March 1825. John McOwen, 92, and "Hesther" McOwen, 69 were enumerated on the 1850 census. John died in December 1858 at the age of 100 years. Hester died in March 1860 at the age 80 so both were gone by the 1860 census. They share a headstone at Springfield Township's Chappel Hill Cemetery.

The only child I know anything about is John's daughter Margaret who married George Bell and she did not name any of her daughters (who survived) Bathsheba so I don't know whether the John McOwen who married Bathsheba Butler was our Margaret's father or not. Has anyone out there sorted out the John McOwen/McCowen/McCunn's in Chester County and can give me some direction?
