I spent most of the day today at the National Archives, SE Region, in East Point GA, digging through census records. Here’s what I found about William/Francis. According to the 1850 census for Morgan Co. Frances was living with her father Jeremiah at age 18. This means she was born in 1831 or 1832. William McCowan was not listed on the 1850 census for Morgan Co. Sometime after 1850 she married William McCowan. The 1860 census for Morgan Co. shows William McCown - age 26, wife Francis – age 27, Elizabeth – age 6 mo. and Ann McCown (his sister?). Real estate value = $1,000. Same census shows an Eliza McCown – age 20 (William’s sister?) , as a “servant” living with William & Martha Stonecipher. Haven’t made connection but Stonecipher also connected to Hurst & many other families in MC. 1870 Census for Roane shows William & Francis living with Dorothy? (Elizabeth?) – age 11, Isabella – age 8, Mary J – age 6, Mathew – age 4, george – age 2 and Susan/Ann (twins) - age 5 mo. His real estate value is “0” and he is working as a farm laborer. What happened here? Did he get kicked out of the county because of his Confederate sympathies, as did some Hursts from Morgan Co.? 1880 Census shows Francis, a widow, in Fentress Co. with Mary J. – age 16, Mathew – age 15, George – age 12, the twins age 10 and william – age 8. Evidently William died sometime after 1872. The 1900 census for Morgan co. shows Francis McCowan living with W. J. Howard & wife, Elizabeth (b: dec 1860). Indicates that Francis, who is Mr. Howard’s mother in law was born in Aug 1832. I haven’t made the connection but her brother was also married to a Howard, Susannah. I think this is the history of William McCowan/Francis Hurst. There are too many similarities to be coincidence. Why don't you contact me by e-mail at <ernesthurst@msn.com> if you have evidence that this is incorrect or other information.
