Hi Bruce, I recently read Bea's comprehensive and very scholarly treatise regarding the McCowans and McGowans.
I don't know if any of your group have done FTDNA Y-DNA tests but there is a discount if you use a Surname Group when you sign up. The McCown Surname Group is one. You can use that group or form a McCowan group if none exists.
I believe that I may be descended from the Irish Scotti who relocated to southwestern Scotland. because I have very close matches with the various Maguire related families all the way from 12 to 67 markers and one of my matches at 67 markers is a Johnstone from the Cummock vicinity. That means that both he and I have very strong matches with the ruling line of Maguires due to descent from a common ancestor prior to the use of surnames. If you would like to I can be reached at wmccown@aceweb.com or through this
