My great grandfather was Donald McCowan born near Oban in Argyle. Therefore I have assumed that he was of the McDougal clan. My grandfather was born in the Parish of Kilchrenan in 1841. (Yes, I am old. I am 80 and my mother was 43 when I was born.)My great grandmother was Ann Cowan. In the 1841 census when my grandfather was only 2 months old the name in the census was McCowan. In the 1851 and 1861 census the Mc was dropped. In the 1861 census one of my grandfathers brothers was listed as head of househokd. Aparently my great grandfather gave the infromation in 1881 and he reverted to McCowan. The Mc was gone again in the 1891 census. To the best of my knowledge my grandfather was always known by Cowan.

I have never looked up Clan McDougal membership requirements. Maybe I will.

Donald Cowan Strathdee

I had't heard of a McCowan connection to clan Donald
