Diann: Hi,guess we're cousins! My grandmother,Martha Jane Kirkland Fulks was a sister to Dock Kirkland.. How in the world did you find documentation on his death? All I have is what my grandmother and Aunt Lou Davis told me..he died in a logging accident,a tree fell on him...and that Dr. McCorckle had delivered all three of Anne's children and after her husband's death, she had James Hezekiah Kirkland.. I have not searched the land records for Dr. McCorkle or his will or estate settlement...McCorcle Mountain was beside the land Wm and Anne Riche Kirkland entered in 1858.. Another question is..were there two Wm Riley Kirkland's ...my research shows that Wm R. Kirkland and Anne were married 1846, and he was dead by 1850..yet 1854 another Wm R Kirkland married Malinda Tucker, daughter of John Tucker, three children by 1860 and he disappears...Then we have the Wm R Kirkland who married Sarah Harless (from Bell Factory,Al..daughter of John Harless,SC Milita Revoultionary War Verteran buried near Bell FActory)...in 1850 Madison Cty, Al..they were living in Marshall 1850.. Then to make thingsmore fun...there is Wm and Rebecca Birdwell Kirkland, daughter of Abram and Mary Wagner Birdwell-Honeycomb... I also have Captain Wm Riley Kirkland Co 7 Cav. US Army...He was the 7th Co. formed near Fort Riley, Kansas in 1866... I have no doubt our Native American Heritage is connected with the James and Richard Riley of early Jackson County...There were 13 children or 640 acre reservations connected with they and their siblings...from near Bellfonte,Roaches Cove to Goosepond... That is probably where the Riley name comes from..(see Ann Chambless' info at Scottsboro library regarding Riley's) It's interesting to know that Wm R Kirkland (Malinda Tucker's husband) and Joshua J Birdwell (husbnd of Manerva Kirkland Birdwell and others all seem to have just disappeared in 1860...I know several of the Birdwell's traved from Honeycomb to Arkansas by the Tn River around that time..so perhaps they just left Al for adventure...There must be an old Kirkland family Bible somewhere...with Jerimiah Roden marring Susannah Kirkland and settling at Rodentown...both born SC, and with Johnathan Gregory Kirkland being here too...I wonder if maybe John (Wm's bro.-m- to Anne Riche) is not actuaoly Johnathan Gregory Kirkland..If so they would be sons of Benjamin and Allender (Ellender,Alcy) Kirkland of SC...descendants of the Tory Moses Kirkland of SC....Abstract deeds of my parents...which included most of Fulks Point, and land at the top of the mt...show a widow Alcy Kirkland as being the original owner...could she be the Ellender,(Allinder) living with John Kirkland in 1850 age 75?) Anyway..all this is fun and for years, I have tried to prove a connection with Dr. McCorkle...(he descends from the Crockett line, and a Captain McCorkle from Revolutionary War fame)...I wonder why Dr. McCorkle's grave itself is not marked...just his sons, to my knowledge...I would think that he would have contributed something to the support of J H Kirkland....There might even be McCorkle Bible somewhere..I admire Anne Riche Kirkland for her strength and preservence...her life must have been difficult..rearing the four children (the death of son Francis Kirkland when he was about 14..or else he disappears by 1860-70),the War Between the States, and yet she lived a long life...leaving so many of us descendants...Her story is special to me...I wish we could find her photograph somewhere.. It could be some of the old ones in my grandmothers photos...I do know that Aunt Lou Davis said she and my grandmother were born in the old Kirkland house that stood where the new Grant watertank is now-by Davis Road..the old barn build by JH Kirkland..and the boys is still standing off Davis Road down toward the spring, where grandmother and Aunt Lou said they had to go to wash clothes... I would appreciate any info you have...Maybe we can mark their gravesites at Old Union Cemetery...Dorothy Padgett told me at decoration day recently-at Old Union- that the gravesite of Granny Parker was marked by her cousin...but she was always told it was actually the gravesite of Granny Riche...(her ancester Martha Riche m Parker and was sister to Anne Riche Kirkland)...so in all probability both William and Rebecca Riche are buried at Old Union.... Hope I haven't rambled to much. You must be kin to my cousin Ralph Cross too... Debbie
