The last battle of the Revolutionary War was in 1781. So your ancestor, John Andrew McConnell, born about twenty years after the war ended, was not a General in that war. Also, the 1850 census in Cambria Co., PA shows he was a farmer with $251 in assets.
People used to tell stories to pass the time and good stories about ancestors often involved military honors and great wealth.I have my own collection of tall tales that were passed down to me and they are entertaining even if most of them aren't really true.
I believe John A. McConnell's parents were Arthur J. McConnell and Catherine Moury from Antrim, Ireland and his grandparents were William McConnell and Sarah McCann.Much of this ancestry is on the Internet.I would be glad to send you what I have. The McConnells in Cambria County, PA were Roman Catholic.
