The Clan Donald DNA Project is the surname project for MacDonald, McConnells, many others with similar variant surnames, and for others from families associated with Clan Donald. It is the largest family and surname based DNA project in existence, and reached the milestone of having 700 project members with results posted on the project tables about a week ago, 8 months after reaching the 600 member milestone. There are 38 McConnell men with DNA results posted on the project tables, 2 MacConnell men, and many others with surnames that are variants of MacDonald and may share ancestry with McConnell men since the adoption of surnames.
As a McConnell researcher, I like to help other McConnell researchers within the Clan Donald DNA Project make the most of their DNA results, and I see a lot of progress being made. One family group that I have been working with has just found another genetic cousin who does not share a previous paper trail connection with them and has an interesting DNA connection to the ruling lines of the Laigin people of Ireland.
Another group matches the chiefs of the MacDonald clan, and the 700th member of the project, Chieftain David Foster Macdonald of Castle Camus, appears to be one of their closer relatives in the project.
There are a number of genetically distinct McConnell families in the project who clearly don't share a male line connection since the adoption of surnames, and testing McConnell DNA lines is therefore an extremely effective way of sorting out probable and possible McConnell male line relatives and unrelated McConnell male lines.
