I have a copy of an article from History of Miami Co., Ohio regarding Richard W. Brandon. Part of it is quoted as follows: "The spirit of 1876 had a well-marked outcrop in the fourth generation in the late war, which received five of the sons, and four of the sons-in-law, all entering the service as members of Co. B, 71st O. V. I., and all as privates but H. K. McConnell, who had a Second Lieutenant's recruiting commission; when mustered out, the sons' ranks were R. W., First Corporal; Samuel, First Lieutenant; Amos, Brevet Major; E. R. and I. V., Privates; the ranks of the sons-in-law, H. K. McConnell, Brevet Brigadier General; A. E. Duncan, Assistant Surgeon; William McConnell, First Lieutenant; John R. Johnson, Sergeant; all returned home; they participated in the battle of Shiloh, Jonesboro, latter part of siege of Atlanta, Lovejoy Station, two days' fight at Franklin, Nashville, Tenn., numerous skirmishes, and, at close of war, were sent into Texas, where they suffered severely by change of climate."
In the 1921 Greenville Advocate obituary of Richard W. Brandon it states as follows: "Richard W. Brandon enlisted from Miami county, O., October 7th, 1861, and was mustered into U. S. service at Paducah, Ky., October 20th, 1861, as a private of Company B, 71st Regiment, O. V. I. under Captain H. K. McConnell and Col. Rodney Mason to serve three years or for the duration of the war. The regiment was assigned to the [hard to read - either 2d or 3d] brigade, 3d division army corps, and he participated in the following engagements: Shiloh or Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, April 6th and 7th, 1862; Clarksville, August 19th, 1862; Fort Donalson, August 25th, 1862; Cumberland Iron Works, August 26th, 1862; second battle of Clarksville, September 7th, 1863; and a number of other minor engagements. He was promoted to the rank of corporal and honorably discharged at Louisville, Ky., August 10th, 1863, on a surgeon's certificate of disability."
Richard W. Brandon (1836-1921) was my gg-grandfather. He was md to Mary Ann McConnell (1836-1903), sister to Robert (1824-1863).
I would be interested in your book. Let the Forum know when it has been printed, please!
