This is not my family of McConnells. Just thought I'd try to help. There is a John McConnell b. Dec 1866 married to a Clara R. b. May 1869 living in Steubenville Ward 2, Jefferson Co., OH in 1900. They have no children at that time. By 1910 they have a John B., age 9, and a William E., age 5 who are listed as sons. In 1920, in Mingo Junction, Jefferson Co., they have only William with them. If they had other children they may have been born and died before the census could record them. Hope this has helped a little. Good luck in your continued search.
