The Scottish Connection

I have done absolutely no research into my family geneology, but I thought some information that I have would interest members of this forum. According to the Clan Donnachiadh Society, McConkey is a recognized surname (or sept) of Clan Donnachiadh. McConkey, spelled this way,is considered to be primarily an Ulster branch of the clan. Our ancestors are thought to have migrated to Ulster from Scotland. A linguistic connection can be made by observing that, in Gaelic, Son of Donnachiadh is Macdhonnachiadh. Since this is pronounced (approximately) as Mac Gonnakie, the evolution to McConkey (or MacConkie) is obvious. Given this infomation from the clan society, my father's characterization of our family as Scotch-Irish seems appropriate.

For those who are hungry for bare-bones information, my father was Kenneth V McConkey of central Illinois. He was the youngest of seven sons (born 1907) of Clarence McConkey, a farmer near Weldon, Illinois. I have no information about my great-grandfather at all. My grandfather died many years before my birth.
