McCollum or McCallum Ireland

We had a person respond from Ancestry.com that my father Eugene McCallum had a hit for his line of McCall's that have been in America since 1700's, while this does not seem to be a good match, who knows?

McCallum:

We believe that the last name McCallum was spelled with a "o" instead
of an "a" in Ireland (McCollum), but, at what point it changed or if it never
was with an "o" is unknown. Family Legend has it that the name was changed to
an "a" spelling at Ellis Island, but, the ship passenger list shows it was
spelled with an "a" by Rose McCallum when she registered aboard the ship while
still in Glasgow, Scotland. For the purposes of this project we will spell it McCallum.

We can trace the McCallum family back to Edward Joseph McCallum, of the Derry
McCallums, and his wife Liza O'Rourke, of the Cavan O'Rourkes. Edward Joseph
McCallum was Born: 1810 in Londondery , Ireland , he died in 1879 and is buried
at St. Joseph 's Catholic Church in Londondery. His wife, Liza O'Rourke, we
believe to be buried at St. Josephs as well. We believe there were three
boys, Edward Joseph Jr, Patrick McCallum ( Eugene 's Grandfather) and James.

Patrick McCallum was born:1858 in Londonery Ireland . Patrick married Rose
Doland. Rose was born in 1859, perhaps also in Londonery. Patrick and Rose
met on a beach in Ireland . Patrick and Rose lived in Ballyshannon , Ireland .

Family legend (see attachment Aunt Rose's Memoir) has it that Patrick worked
as an Personal Assistant to a Doctor Shiel. (see website for Dr. Shiel)
Patrick was rumored to be a Fenian, a member of the Irish Catholic Political
Party fighting against the British Protestants in Ireland . When a infamous
Lord Leitrim was murdered by the Fenian's (see web site Lord Leitrim's murder)
Patrick who may have had information about the killing, left the area and went
to Scotland and worked as a pursuer on a merchant liner.

Research has found several problems with this legend and we are not sure the
real reasons for the decision to leave Ireland . There is a big discrepancy of
years between the murder of Lord Leitrim and Patrick being anyway involved.

We do know that Patrick was working on a merchant line when his wife, Rose and
their five children (see note for 2 more children) moved back to Londonary. Rose and her children soon joined the millions of Irish fleeing conditions in Ireland and came to New York City, aboard the S.S. Nebraska in 1895 (see attachment Ship Log mail.yahoo.com)

Rose 38, Edward 14, Mary 11, Sidney 9, Josephine 7 and Patrick Jr. 5 are listed as ships passengers)

(Aunt Rose document states that a son Michael 2yrs old also was aboard, but is not listed on the ships log, also a James died at 9months old and is buried in Ireland )

Patrick soon joined his family in America . He died in 1938 and is buried at
an unknown cemetery in Brooklyn , NY . His wife Rose Dolan, may also have died
in the late 1930s or early 1940s, and is probably buried in the same cemetery.
The eldest son, about age 14 upon arrival in America , was Edward Joseph
McCallum, my father ( Eugene speaking). They settled like most of the Irish in
New York City . Edward Joseph, soon found work as a taxi driver in New York
City .

Edward Joseph McCallum ( Eugene 's Father) was the eldest child of Patrick's
children, and was born in Donegall , Ireland in 1880. He met Elizabeth Delano
while driving his taxi. In those days people crossing from Brooklyn to
Manhattan and back would have to walk over the bridge as the taxi's from one
city were not allowed to cross over into the other city. He managed to have
his cab there for her everyday and they soon fell in love. Edward Joseph
married Elizabeth Delano in 1905. He worked as a printer after the marriage,
but returned to driving taxi's later. He was a devout Catholic. He had a
photographic memory and nice handwriting. He enjoyed reading the newspaper
and listening to the news on the radio. When asked a question, he would
always start at the historical start of the answer, so you would fully
understand the complexity of the answer. Impatient listeners, like his
youngest son Eugene, did not appreciate Edward Joseph's historical review
until he was much older. Edward Joseph enjoyed riding a bicycle, often
participating in bicycle races, and ice skating, both of which he did until he
was quiet old. He did not drink at all or smoke cigarettes. He wore a suit
everyday, even to the beach, where he would change into a swim suit, which was
not unusual in that day. He had very white skin and would sun burn easily.
Edward Joseph was a quiet man who enjoyed long drives on weekends with his
family. He enjoyed bringing all the kids and meeting all the relatives and
having weekend picnicking get togethers at Lake Zoar in Connecticut . He died
in 1959 and is buried Mountain View , Cemetery in Bridgeport Connecticut .
