COL. JOHN MCCOLLUM/RUTH CUTHBERTSON

  of 1931

I stumbled on the following information quite by accident, but thought I'd post it to see if it would help anyone doing research.

Col. John McCollum b Sept 1800, d July 14, 1874--married Ruth Cuthbertson. They are buried in the old Bethel Cemetery, which is now an unmarked, very hard to locate cemetery in a wooded area. I visited this cemetery yesterday and took pictures. There are several head stones that are only large rocks, therefore, there is no information. Buried there are also at least 2 Civil War veterans, one who is Josiah Winchester--I believe a son-in-law? There are also familes of: Adams, Clarks, Mercers, Bass, Lovel, Broadway, Gallaway, Gordon, and others I can't read.

I know that this Col. McCollum came from a family that immigrated from Ireland. The Cemetery is located between Baconton and Albany, GA--almost at the countly lines.

There is also a AS McCollum who wrote the family history and had it published in Nov. 1929. This can be found in a PDF file at:
http://www.winchestertree.com/BobSmithInputArea/ArchBoard_ASMcCOLUM-1929/ArchBoard.pdf
The descendents he lists were, at that time, located in NC, DC, NC, GA, FL, LA, and TX.

I hope this helps someone with their research. I was not researching this line, but stumbled upon the cemetery and the Civil War headstones got me curious and I researched a little. Since this is not part of my lineage, I would hate to not pass the info on to benefit others.

Please feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Heidi
