Roger: I am the Historian for the Tuscarawas County, Ohio Detachment of the MARINE CORPS LEAGUE and while I am not descended from the McCollister family, I have been researching Reason McCollister's brother John for approximately 2 years. John was born in 1839 in Allegheny City, PA (annexed to Pittsburgh approx. 1906)and enlisted in the Union Navy at Cincinnati, OH, April 1863 to serve on the U.S.S. Queen City. The "Queen City" was a "Tinclad" gunboat (No. 26) that served in the Mississippi Squadron of the "Brownwater Navy". John's ship was ambushed by forces under the command of Gen. Joseph Shelby on the White River in Arkansas on June 24, 1864. John was 1 of approximately 20 of the 65 crew members that was taken prisoner. According to John's own 1 paragraph biography published as part of a collection of Tuscarawas Co. Ohio Civil War veteran's recollections published in 1893, he was held prisoner for approximately 4 months and then paroled. According to John's naval records obtained from the National Archieves, he later served on the U.S.S. ships "Clara Dolson" and "Great Western" and was discharged at Cairo, Ill. March-April, 1865. John died in January, 1929 and is buried in Union Cemetery (Lot No. 33, Block No L, Grave No 8) City of Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas Co. OH. While I have reason to be skeptical of some of John's comments, I will quote the comments about his brothers contained in his biography:
"His two brothers, Reason and David McCollister served in the late war. the former in the 70th O. Inf. and 11th O. Cav., and the latter in 5th Ohio Inf. Their fater, Thomas McCollister, is deceased, but their mother, Nancy (Davis), daughter of a Revolutionary soldier, is still living (1893)".
After an admittedly brief review of records, I have not been able to confirm Reason or David's military service.
