Thomas J. McCollister marries Martha J. Timmons, whose maiden name was Dennis, on the 13th of February 1868 in Pickaway County Ohio. In the 1870 census for Pickaway County, Monroe Township, Ohio Thomas McCollister is listed as being 32 years old. Living with him are his wife Martha (35) and their son Grant (2). There are also two daughter our of Martha's first marriage. Grant is short for Ulysses Grant who was my grandfather.
According to the wedding certificate for Ulysses Grant McCollister to Lyde Dell Stedman in 1903, Ulysses was 34 years old. This would place the year of birth as 1869. According to Ulysses Death Certificate he was born on May 5, 1869 and was 65 years, 6 months and 11 days old. It also states that his father Thomas McCollister was born in Ohio.
Thomas J. McCollister must have been born about 1838 in Ohio. At present I am assuming in Pickaway County but it could have been Pike, Perry, Ross, Franklin, Jackson or….
Martha Dennis remarries for a third time in 1876. That would mean that Thomas McCollister has died or that they were divorced. I have no evidence for either of these possibilities.
I am looking for information concerning this Thomas J. McCollister. When and where he was born. Whether he was divorced or died. If a birth certificate could be found for Ulysses Grant, there might be more information on it.
All I know at present is that Thomas McCollister was born ca 1838, marries in 1868, has a child in 1869 and can no longer be found after the 1870 census. Any help would be appreciated.
