Charley
Thanks for the evidence on Sarah's maiden name. As to the McColgin's I've never located Thomas and Sarah McColgin's marriage record or residence(s). I know Thomas McColgin's family came from Botetourt-Augusta County VA area to Green County KY area 1780's. Edward McColgin, the family patriarch died in Green County about 1812. John McColgin, the father of our Thomas McColgin, died in Green Co. in 1838.

Emily Jane's death record states she was born in Green Co. KY and had been a resident of Illinois for 80 years when she died in 1905, which indicates her mother Sarah was probably in IL as early as 1825. Just a guess but Sarah's Hayes family may have emigrated from TN to Green Co. area. It's puzzling to find different census info. but typical. Emily Jane gave her mother's birthplace as KY in 1880 Census (sister Mary said TN, sister Elizabeth Ann said KY). In 1900 Emily gave Ala. as her mother's birthplace. (Where this came from who knows, maybe it's a clue).

And on the son's... John and Hamilton McColgin. The Will of John McColgin (1838 Green Co. KY ) has this to say:
"I give unto my grandson John McColgin whom I have raised he being a son of Thomas McColgin that portion I entered for that branch of the family which is to one half share with any other children...
It seems that John at least ( and possibly Hamilton as well ) may have been raised by their grandfather and not their mother Sarah.
