Hello All:When they talk about Hardy Pioneer Women of early America, they would have to include Sarah 'Sally' [Hayes] McColgan Vaughn Moore.Born c1798 according to census in TN or PA according to which Census is correct; she married a McColgan circa 1814 and had 5 children:Emily Jane married John Snead in Hamilton Co in 1840; Elizabeth Ann bc1821, Ky, married Iram B. York in Hamilton County, IL on 15 Jun 1837; and Mary Polley bc1814/5 Ky, married Hugh White on 1 Sep 1829 in Hamilton County, IL.
There were also two sons which were probably as you have them, Hamilton and John.
Thomas McColgin died around 1823/4 and his widow, Sarah [Hayes] McColgan second married William Vaughn c1823/4.There were several children prior to William's death in 1835 in Hamilton County, IL.A year later Sarah [Hayes] McColgan Vaughn married Jesse Allen Moore on 17 Jan 1836 in Hamilton County, IL as his second wife. They had 5 more chldren and were to celebrate their 50th Wedding Aniversary before Sarah died on 6 Oct 1887.Their 3d son, Jesse Allen Moore, Jr was born 30 Apr 1841, was in Co H, 6th IL Cav, and married Sarah Jerusha Jones while on leave in 1864.Sarah died in 1906 and Jesse second married a Margaret Wiliams, a widow, in Jefferson County. On his application, he listed his Mother's maiden name as Sarah Hayes. On one of Jesse Jr's Census records, his Father is listed as born in NC and his Mother in PA.I do not know if either are correct.Shortly after Jesse married Sarah in 1837, a Hays family in Gallatin County sold them some land.I have not found where the Hays came from and whether it is Hays or Hayes.
One problem is found in the fact that neither McColgan son married in Hamilton County and neither one appears on the 1850 Census for Hamilton County. When Sarah [Hayes] McColgan married William Vaughn, he took her and her three daughters. When William Vaughn died in 1835, he left everything to Sarah in his Will.William's brother, SAmuel Vaughn wrote a letter to the Judge requesting that he not allow the McColgan children to have any of his brother, William Vaughn's estate. There apparently was no action taken on the request.
That is why I am very interested in the whole story of Sarah Hayes as we do not know where she married Vaughn which is probably the same place my great grandfather married his first wife, Elizabeth Vaughn in 1823 in TN according to the Moore Bible records. But that would not explain the many questions if the McColgans were from Greene County, KY.Another source on the forum says that the McColgan are from PA.I do not know the answer to any of those questions at this time, but hopefully, together, we can make some progress that will help us all.
