Dear Deborah Last week I came across your message from 2003 and was struck about the reference to Patrick moving to Durham, England and working as a coal miner. Though I now live in New Hampshire, I was raised in a Durham coal mining village, Shotton Colliery, the son of a miner. Since my great grandfather (Michael McCluskey) also worked at the colliery and died in his mid-70s in 1954/5, there seems to be a connection between my family and the colliery dating back to at least 1900. I have made some enquires regarding the name of Michael's father and the nature of his employment. Even if he turns out to have worked as a miner, determining whether my ancestors are related to Patrick will be more difficult. While Shotton Colliery opened (1841) about the time Partick immigrated to England, and also operated coke ovens, so did many other collieries in that part of Durham. Hope this information helps. If you have already solved the problem of Patrick's whereabouts in England, I would be grateful if you could share that with me. Who knows, he may be an ancestor of mine too.
