In Reply to: James and John McClurkin-Ayr, Scotland by Linda Branson Byrd of 190

Years ago I was in touch with Dean McClurkin in Tennessee (now deceased) who told me that when the McClurkins left Ireland for S.C., the grandfather did not want to go, he wanted to go back to Ayr, Scotland to live out his life and that a 13 or 14 year old male member of the family accompanied him. I don't know whether that boy ever joined his family in S.C. That has been the only reference we've had to Ayr, Scotland.

A year ago we spent a day going through the church records in Edinburgh and could not find anyone with the name McClurkin, McClurkan, McClurken, McClerkin, etc. listed before the mid 1800's. We did find, however, plenty of Mclorgans and the like and even those were not from around Ayr. I tried to get a Scottish genealogist to help but she turned me down - too difficult - and her specialty was listed as Scottish emigrants to Ireland! The general consensus at the records office was that "McClurkin is Irish".

Like the others responding, I am more confused than ever.
