Based on recent research it has become evident that all of the McClurgs in the central counties of Mississippi are descendants of James McClurg of Nottoway VA and Abbeville SC and his wife, Margaret Morgan. It has long been known that William McClurg of Carroll Co., born 1800, was their son. He moved to MS as early as 1821. His sons, Samuel Morgan and Yancey Crawford, fathered many of the McClurgs in Carroll Co. and all those buried at the Vaiden Cemetery in Carroll. However, there are also McClurgs in the neighboring counties who are descendants of William's brother, James D. McClurg, who died in Greenville Co. SC. His son James Harvey McClurg moved to Choctaw MS after the Civil War. He was there for the 1870 census. His children were James Augustus (or Augustus James) McClurg born SC ca. 1860, Newton McClurg b. SC ca. 1863 and Missouri Alice McClurg, born SC 1858, who married Curtis Andrew Carson in Webster Co. MS.
