Up Date:The McClurgs of early Blount Co. TN are very important to researchers tracing our family lines. Blount County is where William McClurg migrated to from York Co PA. about 1800. He brought with him some children who remained in Blount County as well as being joined there from Virginia, two sons, John and James McClurg who had married in Rockingham Co VA. John lived near Big Springs Church and removed to Carroll Co IN in 1830. He had one son, Harvey who remained in Blount Co and sired seventeen sons and one daughter. In 1860 he had removed to Georgia. James remained in Blount County TN and is buried at Eusibia Presb. Church as well as other members of his family.
Researches from McClurg descendants usually look back to the 1850 Blount County Census for connecting data. Unfortunately, the enumerator of that census missed ten families living in the 11th Civil District, This is the area that McClurgs dwelled. Only William & Matilda Hooper McClurg are listed for this census. Many have attempted to connect to William's family. of those McClurg families omitted from the Census was James McClurg, father of this William McClurg and he was there in 1850 as he died in 1856. Harvey McClurg was also one of the ten families omitted from the 1850 Blount Co TN census. Rebecca McClurg was listed in the 1850 Census of Blount Co TN, but as the wife of Robert Tedford, the Clerk of the Court at the time.
All McClurgs of early Blount County Tennessee are closely related and descend from one William & Mary )McCreary) McClurg of York Co PA.This is the importance of the genealogy of Blount County McClurgs.
I have spent more than 50 years on researching our family Tree which originated in 1708 in Wigtonshire Scotland. Much of the lineage is lost history, and in a last Hoorah, I wanted to include as many of James & Elizabeth (Scothorn) McClurg's family of the Esubia Presb. Church group as possible. Having attempted to do this with no response from researches or family members, I am now ready to prepare a genealogical report of our family tree to be placed in the genealogical section of the Blount County Public Library for future generations. This is fitting as William McClurg b. 1755 PA last address was Blount County Tennesee.
