CHARLES AUSTIN RANKIN, M.D., who for a quarter of a century has practiced his profession in McKeesport, is there highly regarded as a learned and skillful physician and surgeon, is a son of WILLIAM and MARY (McCLURE) RANKIN, who in 1883 left the Mifflin Township farm on which they had long resided and located in McKeesport, where WILLIAM RANKIN died May 31, 1904. WILLIAM RANKIN was a son of ARCHIBALD RANKIN, also born in Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, Pa., whose parents were pioneers of that section. The RANKIN farm in Mifflin Township had been patented by William Penn to a Mr. Swearinger and by him sold to the RANKIN ancestors.

WILLIAM RANKIN was born on the homestead in Mifflin Township, Feb. 17, 1836, and died in McKeesport, Pa., May 31, 1904. He lived on the homestead until 1883, then moved to McKeesport, which was ever afterwards his home. He was a Democrat in politics, and both he and his wife were members of the Mifflin United Presbyterian. He married MARY ANN McCLURE, born in Mifflin Township, Dec. 25, 1837, died in McKeesport, May 6, 1896. MRS. RANKIN was a daughter of FRANCIS (2) McCLURE, and granddaughter of JUDGE FRANCIS (1) McCLURE, who was born in Ireland in 1742, came to Pennsylvania about 1770, died in Allegheny County, Pa., in 1845, aged 103 years. In Pennsylvania, JUDGE McCLURE settled first in Lancaster County, later of Wheeling, Va., where he was postmaster several years, finally settling on 500 acres in “Buttermilk Hollow,” Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, Pa. There he built, probably about the year 1800, a stone house which has now disappeared. He was a man of wealth and influence, associate judge of Allegheny County, kept a pack of fox hounds, and had his home furnished as only the wealth can furnish. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, and a Whig politically. He married MARGARET McCLURE (not a relative), and among their children was a son, FRANCIS (2) McCLURE, born at the “Buttermilk Hollow” McCLURE homestead in Mifflin Township, and there died in 1874, age 80 years. He was an influential and substantial farmer, owning and living upon the homestead all his life. He was a Republican in politics, and a Presbyterian in religion. He married REBECCA CRISWELL, born in County Mayo, Ireland, and brought to the U. S. by her parents when a girl of 13. They were the parents of 8 children, their sixth a daughter, MARY ANN, who married WILLIAM RANKIN, of previous mention, and they were the parents of several children, the youngest CHARLES AUSTIN RANKIN.

CHARLES AUSTIN RANKIN was born on the RANKIN homestead in Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, Pa., Nov. 25, 1873. He there spent his first ten years. In 1883 his parents moved to McKeesport, which has since been his home and the scene of his professional success...He passed the State Board of Examiners in June, 1896, and at once began the practice of his profession in McKeesport...He has pursued the general practice of medicine and surgery. He has been on the medical staff of McKeesport Hospital for nine years, and on the surgical staff of the hospital for nine years...In politics he is a Republican, and in religious faith affiliated with the First Methodist Episcopal Church...DR. RANKIN married, April 12, 1899, BELLE ALLEN, born in Coal Valley, Pa., daughter of DAVID and HELEN (HILL) ALLEN. DR. and MRS. RANKIN are the parents of three children: MARY McCLURE, born Dec. 12, 1902, a student of Allegheny College; MARGARET ALLEN, born April 15, 1906 (Easter Sunday), a high school student; RUTH HILL, born Jan. 24, 1915. The family home is a beautiful residence at No. 1016 Walnut Street, McKeesport, built by DR. RANKIN’S order in 1904.

I am not related to the Rankin or McClure family. But I wanted to give you this information.
