I'd like to add a little to Samuel McClure's family.Samuel and Hannah Esther Sharp McClure's oldest son was James Madison McClure who was born in Adams Co. OH March 16, 1833 and died at the Vet. Hospital in Leavenworth KS March 31, 1905.He doesn't appear by name on the census because as a teenager he left home and went to work on the Erie Canal driving mules. While there he became friends with James A. Garfield (later president).Family stories say they liked to wrestle and James McClure named a son after him.James (my gggrandfather) appears to have not lived with his family again although brother Henry and his second wife were living with him in Iroquios Co. IL in 1870.Samuel died in Peoria Co. IL August 9, 1858 and is buried in Lancaster Cemetery, Glasford, IL.Do you know where Hannah is buried? Her parents are buried in Iowa.I did not find a will but there are documents stating that Halbert "willed" his land to his son Samuel when he moved (about 1830) to Indiana to live with one of his daughters and her family (name unknown).Halbert died before 1840.There is a paper trail linking James M. to our Samuel as well as other references in Jame's military file and later censuses.James served in the 11th Indiana Infantry and the 2nd New York Calvery during the Civil War.He was wounded in 1864, captured and sent to Libbey Prison in Richmond, VA where he nearly died.He was released later that year and was sent to the Naval Academy Hospital in Maryland to recover. He married Louvisa P. Smith in 1868 and later moved to Kansas.Although disabled from his wounds they had 12 children.
If you find anything more on this family I'd be very interested.
