McClure-Anderson Family
I’m looking for information on a Richard and Mary Anderson McClure. Both are buried in the Brucetown Methodist Church cemetery, in Frederick County, Virginia. Richard McClure was born August 24, 1799 and died March 4, 1857. Mary Anderson McClure was born August 03, 1784 and died October 8, 1853. They were married on October 04, 1821 their marriage was performed by Nathan Young. It would appear that Richard and Mary Anderson McClure produced the following children: James, born c1823, Mary, born c1827 – died in October of 1853. Mary was married to Nathaniel Barley. Colbert, born c1829 and Rebecca, born c1835. It would appear that after the death of his father, Colbert McClure moved west, maybe to Indiana.
Mary Anderson McClure, may have been the eighth child of Colbert Anderson, jr. of Berkeley County, Virginia. I have no positive proof of that. But there are of number things that lead me to believe there is a connection. First, Mary Anderson McClure’s birth date fits the time period of Colbert Anderson’s nine children. Secondly, Richard McClure and Mary Anderson were married by Nathan Young, he had performed marriages for three of Mary’s siblings, Providence, Rebecca and Nancy Anderson. Thirdly, Richard and Mary Anderson McClure named one son, Colbert, probably after her father. Colbert appears not to be a very common name used by families in the Berkeley County and Frederick County area. The fourth point, Colbert Anderson, jr. and his family resided near Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, Virginia and Richard and Mary McClure resided at Brucetown, Frederick County, Virginia. The two communities are less than 10 miles apart. The fifth point, Colbert McClure left Brucetown for Indiana after the death of his parents. Mary Anderson McClure had siblings that were living in Indiana at that time.
I don’t have any information Richard McClure’s ancestry. If anyone could help with any additional information on Richard’s family I would appreciate your effort. Also, if anyone could help me prove or disprove Mary’s connection with the Colbert Anderson, jr. family of Bunker Hill, I would appreciate any assistance in that area. Lastly, if anyone has any information on Colbert McClure, son of Richard and Mary McClure I would enjoy finding out what became of him after moving west.
Thanks, Jerry Reid
