Beverly,
Thank you for your response. It is appreciated and I can’t tell you how happy I was to finally connect with someone. Your response was immensely helpful but also raises some questions. It appears that W.D.C. McClure is also my great-great grandfather but I have been unable to document it.
You may already be aware that W.D.C. McClure appears to be listed twice in the 1870Sullivan, Moultrie Co. census as follows:
McClure William D.C 38, Sarah A. 37, Sarah C. 18, Francis A, 16, Elizabeth 14, Rachel 12, Isabelle 9, Edward 4, Clara S. 8/12.(house number 360)
and
McClure William D.C. 39, Samantha 39, Samantha C. 18, Thomas A. 16, Rachel A. 12, Isabell 9, Edward E. 3, Clara S. 8/12.(house number 460)
They were taken a day apart and at first I thought that it may have been from two census takers and the house overlapped but I went back to check and the handwriting is identical.
I suppose it could in fact be two households but the similarities make that unlikely. Any ideas?
My great grandmother was Ida Mae McClure. She married John P. Kaigley, 04 Sep1878. They had eight children, Caroline, Ina M., Pauline (my grandmother), Cora D, Lillian, George, Louise, and John William. She died 28 Jun 1943 and is also buried at Marrowbone Cemetery. Prior to 1878 I had been unable to find any trace of Ida Mae. When I came across the McClure family in the 1880 census the first thing that struck me was the similarities between what little I knew about G-Grandma Kaigley and Isabelle/Isabell McClure. They were both born in Illinois in 1861 and both parents were born in Ohio. Isabelle is not listed after 1870 and no trace of Ida Mae before 1878. I know it’s not much but I had a feeling that Isabelle and Ida Mae might be one in the same and then about three weeks ago I came across a listing of the marriage register for Moultrie Co. and found Ida Mae and John P. Kaigley (spelling was Keigle) which listed W.D.C. McClure and Susan Hudson as her parents. I have sent for G-G Kaigley’s death certificate although I have a feeling it’s going to difficult to prove that Isabelle changed her nameand that she and Ida Mae are the same person. I’m hoping that someone may have knowledge of this, but the chances seem pretty slim.
Anyway… this is turning into a novel so I better end. Any info I have (not much) I’d be more than happy to share if you’re interested. You can contact me directly at [email protected]
Once again thanks for your help. I look forward to hearing from you.
Gary
