re. Family of David and Eleanor Steele McClure, Rockbridge Co., VA
My research indicates that David McClure, son of Moses McClure (d. 1778) and his wife Isabelle Steele, and his wife Eleanor Steele (daughter of Nathaniel and Rosannah Steele) had at least three sons:Moses, Halbert, and David. It also appears that all three of these sons resided in Rockbridge Co., VA into the 1820s.It also appears, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that their son is the only Halbert (or Holbert) McClure living there from about 1805 into the 1820s.My ggg-grandfather, William McClure (1809-1877) is supposed to have been born in Rockbridge Co., VA (he died in Trimble Co., KY) and according to the only piece of evidence we have, his father was supposed to have been named Halbert or Holbert McClure.
An examination of the manuscript census (1810 and 1820) certainly shows that Halbert/Holbert McClure (son of David and Eleanor Steele McClure) had a male (or males) of the correct age range living with him at that time.
If, however, it turns out that the family of David and Eleanor Steele McClure is already well-documented and known not to have a child matching my ggg-grandfather there is no point in continuing to pursue this line of research and we'll have to go back to "square one" (as it were) and start all over again.
So, if anyone knows anything about the family of David and Eleanor Steele McClure I'd love to hear from you.Regardless of whether it supports or eliminates this "working theory" (i.e., that my ggg-grandfather was the son of Halbert/Holbert and grandson of David and Eleanor Steele McClure) it will be much appreciated.
Thanks for the help.
