Bob, The Clan MacLeod Society in Scotland and in America claim the McClure family (and all various spellings thereof) to have originated in Scotland (of Viking descent) and is much more than a 'sept' of that Clan. They claim the name McClure to orginally have been MacLeod and the name was misunderstood by the English (probably by a ship clerk)when spoken in Gaelic, their ancient language. I have been closely associated with this organization for many years and they have a genealogist who may be able to help with questions (for Society members only) concerning the McClures. The ancient chalice or cup you mentioned is housed in the MacLeod museum in Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye.Search the web for info on Clan MacLeod and you can find many more fantastic legends that the McClures can claim to be a part of.They hold a 'gathering'(Parliament) every four years at Dunvegan Castle and it will next be in Aug. 2002.All members of the Clan MacLeod Society are invited to attend and I encourage all McClures to consider joining.Applications on web at www.clan-macleod.com.
