When I was in the Air Force, I talked a bit on the phone with a Major McCluer from New Orleans, LA. He said his family was part of the Virginia (caucasian) McCluer's that came down in the early 1800s.As I recall, he said part of his family went to Texas. It's been a long time ago since we talked (late 1970s.)You might be able to find him in the phone book for New Orleans or in a Air Force Reserve Locator.
He had called me while I was stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio because we both spelled our names the same way (McCluer.) At the time, I knew absolutely nothing about my family history. Thanks to him, since 1978, I've become a student of genealogy and its a worth while hobby.
I've managed to trace part of my McCluer family to Virginia, but I can't find out further back than 1790 or who the older McCluer's were. There were many McCluer/McClures in VA that were slave owners, at least according to the Wills that I've seen.I think I read at one time that the majority of the VA population were black slaves (probably pre-civil war.)
I have a website, McClures of America at:

I don't have anything on Louisiana or Texas currently, but feel free to browse.I have a 1914 scanned copy of the book by James A. McClure on "The McClure Family."Perhaps it will give some clues on where to search.
Best of luck, it's a fascinating hobby.
