Charles McClung and Charity Vandal

My great great grandmother Sally McClung was the daughter of Thomas McClung and Delilah Burchfield. Thomas McClung was the son of Charles McClung and Charily Vandal. When trying to locate the parents of my Charles McClung, I relied on several sources, McClung Association, Vandal Association and also the "McClung Genealogy". I was somewhat confused about the date of birth for my Charles McClung, the McClung book listed 17 Mar 1782, but the tombstone list 20 Oct 1775. I ask several people about this error, but everyone insisted that my Charles was the son of William McClung and Abigail Dickinson. After all, this information has been known for over 100 years, not one person had ever questioned this fact!

The DAR turned down my application of Charles McClung that married Charity Vandal as the son of Grandfather Billie. According to Bible records, Grandfather Billie's son Charles was born in 1782.

So who is the father of my Charles McClung??? Not one person other than me, list the parents of Charles McClung as Thomas McClung and Nancy " Agnes" Black. Charles and Charity named first child Thomas McClung. They also named a daughter Agnes McClung. Other children are named after Charles' brothers and sisters. The problem is that most people list that Thomas McClung died at the Battle of Point Pleasant. This has been accepted as a fact! There is not one piece of evidence that proves that Thomas died in the that battle. His name is not listed on the monument. Thomas named children Rachel, Edward, Alexander, Jane, John, and Thomas. These are the very same names, plus a few more that Charles and Charity named their children! Greenbrier Co., WV records by Larry Schuck prove that Thomas McClung is living in Greenbrier up until about 1788, then his wife Agnes becomes head of household. Tax records indicate that in 1805 three men named Charles paid taxes. Charles son of William, Charles son of Thomas, and the third Charles is unknown at this time.

So for the time being, Charles McClung that married Charity Vandal is without parents. This will remain until I can prove that Thomas McClung did not die at the Battle of Point Pleasant and prove that he is the father of Charles McClung that married Charity Vandal. If anyone has information that can help prove that Charles McClung is the son of Thomas MCclung and Nancy Agness Black, please email me at gasb@aol.com Ialso need help sorting out all the different men named Charles in this time period. After a hundred years of misinformation, I would like to see a book printed with the correct information about Charles McClung son of Thomas.
