I visited Northern Ireland a few years back to find out more of my ancestry. What I found is that there are many McCloys in Northern Ireland. My family is from the Coleraine area. Alot of McCloys there. Almost a whole page in the phone book. I was able to find, through a distant cousin, the home my great grandfather was born and raised in, it is just outside of Cushendal(hope spelling is right). We also found several headstones in the cemetary there, with McCloy names. It is believed that sometime during the late 1600's or 1700's two brothers moved to Ireland from Scotland and settled there and began families. I would say the wierdest part of being over there was most people in Scotland would see or hear out surname and say, "thats a strong Irish name" and the folks in Ireland would say just the opposite. This has caused me some confusion as to just where the McCloy name originated. The farthest I have been able to trace it is Scotland, however, Scotland was brougth together under the rulership of the Scots, who were from Ireland. So I have no positive proof of where the name comes from. I hope i haven't rambled on to much and that some of this is of use to you
